Sofa Update: Lounging in Comfort
Elated to announce that the sofa cushions are DONE. After nearly two years of testing and sitting on ideas (literally), the cushions took a mere few hours to complete.
We went with a clean a simple box cushion at the base and flat cushions at the back. I overcame my fear of sewing zippers, and we now have some snacking-proof cushions we can throw in the wash anytime. The wonderful thing about designing and making your own furniture, is that you can cover all of your unique needs (such as washable cushions for ice cream spills).
We used a soft taupe/ grey chenille fabric with a small amount a stretch, and tightly put this over our interior cushion. The seat cushions are made of a thick sofa foam, with a 6 cm layer of a softer cushion foam, and one layer of batting to help soften edges. The covers are measured a few centimetres too short, to allow for the foam edges to compress and create a rounded look. Back cushions are filled with a poly/ feather combo that keeps its shape while allowing you to sink into the cushion.
The best part of this news? I am done my share of the work on this couch. My husband while take the baton now, and venture into the final sofa frame made from oak.
